Day 1 Arrival in Bogotá
Arrive to the capital of Colombia, a city of roughly 10 million people. A buzzling metropolis with contrasts sitting at 2,600 mts. Most flight from Europe arrive between 12 and 4 pm, if jet lag is something that you suffer from we recommend arriving a day earlier and settling in. Depending on arrival time of all customers we will do a briefing and bike hand over.
Day 2 Bogota - Barichara
Today is a day of colonial towns and history. We begin our day towards the lovely and beautiful town of Villa de Leyva, Colombia's most famous colonial town. We will spend some time here and then hit the road on some amazing mountain roads with beautiful scenery. We finalize our day in the quiet and lovely colonial town of Barichara. An absolutely beautiful town. Here we can have the opportunity of eating the famous "Hormigas Culonas" a snack of the region, fried ants.
Day 3 Barichara - Bucaramanga
A very short riding day will allow us to spend some quality time in the morning exploring Barichara. Late morning we begin our ride towards Bucaramanga, known as the city of parks. On our way to this city we will be riding through Colombia's deepest canyon, El Chicamocha. The scenery today is nothing short of spectacular. For those with an appetite for exploring we have a couple of suggestions of extra roads to ride.
Day 4 Bucaramanga - Honda
Today we will be leaving the eastern mountain range to drop down into the Magdalena river valley. We will be riding in hot temperatures toward another important town of the colony, Honda. Honda used to be a very important river port in the time of the colony it was the last stop for the boats coming from Cartagena, here they would load all shipments onto mules and make the trek up to Bogotá. A beautiful hotel with a pool is waiting for us.
Day 5 Honda - Coffee Region
We leave Honda and the Magdalena valley behind and begin our trek up into the central mountain range. In a matter of hours we will have climbed from 300 mts to 4,000 mts. Stunning views and paved roads will bring us to the top of the world, if the weather is good we will take a side road to take a peak at the Ruiz volcano and it's snow covered peaks. After this we drop down into the lovely coffee region of Colombia.
Day 6 Coffee Region - Medellín
From the coffee region we will make our way to Colombia's second largest city, Medellín. The ride will take us through the roads of coffee plantations and into the valley of the Cauca river. Time permitting we will explore the colonial town of Santa Fe de Antioquia and we will cross the first bridge that spanned the width of the cauca river, El Puente de Occidente. In the afternoon we will arrive to Medellín.
Day 7 Medellín (rest day)
Today we have a well deserved rest day and have the opportunity to explore this lovely city. A city that transformed itself from the bloody home town of Pablo Escobar to a buzzling city with inclusive social programs and architecture, innovative forms of public transport, public parks and so much more. For those that still want to keep riding we can arrange a day ride out to the amazing man made reservoir of Guatape.
Day 8 Medellín - Planeta Rica
After our rest we will begin to make our way towards the caribbean. This day is designed to cover distance between Medellín and Mompós, we leave the mountains behind and drop down again in to the flatlands of the Magdalena basin. An overnight stop will have setup perfectly for our next day.
Day 9 Planeta Rica - Mompós
We leave our hotel and begin our journey towards the colonial town of Mompos. What makes this day special is the 45 minute ferry journey we have to take in order to arrive. Mompos is an river island with very little access. Once we arrive we will have time to relax in a beautiful hotel with a rooftop jacuzzi and patio pool. We can do a city tour of Mompos known for its rich colonial history given that this was the first town of Colombia to declare formal independence from Spain. Also very rich in religion customs and silver handcrafts.
Day 10 Mompós - Cartagena
We ride out to the ferry again and make our way to the jewel crown of the Spanish colony, Cartagena. One of the best presrved historic center and walled cities in the caribbean. Rich with history, tourism, restaurants and perfect weather. This is the best place to finish our tour. Individual departure.
